Well, folks, it wasn't exactly a banner week for reading for me. This might be a DNF record week.
On the upside, I have no unread ebooks left from last year. On the downside, I only had 1 unread ebooks left - a mystery. And I only picked up one new ebook this week - a paranormal mystery. No new hardcopies. Right now, I'm using my Kindle for editing, so I'd better find something to read from the shelves, eh?

4) Just for Now by Rosalind James (1/18/21) - Romance* - 5 stars. New to me but not underappreciated. Free off the Book Gorilla newsletter.
Review: "A lovely story, good plot, and likable characters all the way around with just enough tension between the slightly bruised hero and heroine to make it hard to put down."
DNFs:
1/19/21 - After setting down The Prince, I tried picking up a classic I'd never read. Nope, not that either.
1/19/21 - I started reading Machiavelli's The Prince. Totally not what I thought it was and I didn't even make it through the introduction.
1/16/21 - free - paranormal YA suspense. It started out with this big disclaimer, read at your own risk, trigger warning thing. Puh-leeze. Fine, I won't read it.
1/16/21 - free - paranormal something or other. Gah, present tense annoys me anyway, but this had other annoying points.
1/16/21 - free - ???. I never did figure out what genre this thing was. All I know was that despite the intriguing blurb, what I read of the book was a dud.
1/16/21 - free - suspense. I'd read stuff by this author before and loved it, but this wasn't blowing my skirt up at all.
Currently reading... I haven't picked anything else up - what with the DNFs and then reading my own work for edits. Maybe I need to read some non-fiction and clear the pipes.

I had a pretty good week. I finished off 4 books and started a 5th. I'm at 14 books on the year, 2 ahead of my GR challenge.
ReplyDelete14 - One Fine Fae (Mystic Bayou, Book 4.5), Molly Harper - paranormal romance, 5 stars. Harper writes light, funny and sweet paranormals. I love her Mystic Bayou books, though many are Audible Only, which is a shame. Still, yay for me! In this one a fae midwife comes to town to oversee the birth of the first child of a dragon and a phoenix. Her hero is a human carrying a family curse from a fae.
13 - Lake Silence (The Others, #6), Anne Bishop - alternate paranormal fantasy history (?) (for lack of a better genre descriptor) - 5 stars. Love this series and yes, I read the last two books out of order. WILD COUNTRY events run concurrent with the events in ETCHED IN BONE. And LAKE SILENCE is lighter with a human heroine who isn't afraid to speak her mind--sometimes out loud when she doesn't mean to. Anyway, I wish the author would give us more in the series. Still so many stories to tell!
12 - Fighting for Elena (Tarpley VFD #1; Police and Fire: Operation Alpha), Silver James - romantic suspense with a touch of paranormal. 5 stars. Not unknown to me *looks shifty-eyed* but definitely underappreciated. LOL Yes. I gave myself 5 stars. This is the audio version and it. Was. Trippy! Love the narrator, Marry Jane Conlon. And it was fun to hear my words "acted out." Plus, this is a good story. So...there! Sadly, I can't technically review it on the 'Zon or Audible but I did on GR. So there!
11 - Wild Country (The World of the Others, #2; The Others, #7), Anne Bishop- that whold not-sure-genre thing, 5 stars. This is a hard book because there's so much going on and so emotional. It ends on a hopeful note and is one of my favorites in the series.
Currently listening to THE EMPOROR'S WOLVES. Long story...I'll try to be brief. I discovered the Chronicles of Elantra and LOVED this fantasy series by Michelle Sagara. The MC was interesting and different and the supporting characters awesome. Her prose was lush and the worldbuilding superb. Then about book 13, I just...couldn't. I DNF'd it. I tried #14 and couldn't get past the "Look Inside." I gave up on the series. They released 1 a year so it was easy to forget. Then, I discovered she'd started a spin-off series set in the same world, sort of focused on a major secondary character. I grabbed the audio version from Hoopla because I ain't spending no more $$. Wow. I have hope. I'm about half-way through. The book starts back in time, at the beginning of the other series, and focuses--more or less--on Severn, who is very important in the life of Kaylin, the MC from the original. Confusing, I know. But I always thought Severn was a compelling character and I wanted more of HIS story. I'm getting it, and in a style reminiscent of what drew me to the series originally. So yay. Anyway, that's my gush for the day. And no, the Wolves aren't...WOLVES. They are a form of "police." There are Hawks, Wolves, and Swords, each tasked with a different mission in the kingdom. Okay. Shutting up now.
