Saturday Reading Wrap-up - 7/3/21

Huh.  It's Saturday again.  How'd that happen so quickly?

I only picked up one new ebook this week - a suspense.  I only have one other ebook left unread - an urban fantasy.  Again, no new hardcopies.  I really need to get out to the thrift stores and snag some more books.

Books Read:

45) Undiscovered by Anna Hackett (7/2/21) - Romantic Suspense* - 5 stars.  New to me but not underappreciated.  Free off the ENT newsletter.
Review: "Excellent story. Thrilling plot. Great characters. Interesting premise. Dastardly villain you can love to hate. All around awesome book."
Note: Available in audio format.

44) Spirits, Pies, and Alibis by Nicole St. Claire (6/29/21) - Paranormal Mystery*# - 5 stars.  New to me and underappreciated.  Free off the Book Adrenaline newsletter.
Review: "Cute book with a good story, likable characters, and an interesting mystery."
Note: Available in audio format.

DNFs:

6/27/21 - free.  Cozy Mystery.  Gah. The formatting was messed up, man.  And if the story had been excellent, I probably could've gotten past that.  But it wasn't.  Over describing stuff that isn't essential to the story is becoming one of my pet peeves.  It seemed like every single thing had multiple adjectives in sequence to describe it.  And for pitysakes, put in some commas if you're going to use multiple descriptors for one noun.  The quick brown fluffy-tailed green-eyed old but sprightly fox died from the weight of all those adjectives.  :headdesk:

Currently reading...  I didn't pick anything else up after I finished that romantic suspense.  We'll see what today brings.

What was on your reading list this week?

  1. Thanks for noting if the ones you really like are in audio! I often check to see if I can get a copy from the library or Hoopla. Audio books are not cheap so I want to be really sure I'll love a thing before investing. Heck, even when I really like a book, I sometimes just leave it on the wish list if I can listen for free. Cuz, I'm cheap like that. Anyway...

I had a good week, sort of. Still in something of a slump but I found relistens that worked and a new release. I'm at 104 books for th eyear, which puts me 4 books ahead of schedule.

104 - Dimitri (Her Russian Protector, #2), Roxie Rivera ConRom 3 stars. I remember why I didn't buy the whole series, and managed to get the two audio versions while it was on KU and the Audible versions were $1.99 rather than $17.95. One needs to suspend belief on this series.

103 - When He's an Alpha (The Olympus Pride, #2), Suzanne Wright ParaRom - 4 stars: While Wright isn't a fave author per se, I enjoy her shifters series (3 of them to date). The heroines are quirky but strong and the men are alphas. Lots of banter and she does things like team a Pallas cat (hero) with a Tasmanian devil (heroine).

102 - Ivan (Her Russian Protector, #1) R. Rivera ConRom 3 stars: See above for thoughts on this series.

101 - Conor (Boston Underworld, #6) A. Zavarelli ConRom/Crime 5 stars: This series is well written and believable. The narrator helps, too. It's been awhile and these stories just hit the spot in my otherwise reading drought. She's in danger, he reads her wrong but she's his one so HEA after his "brothers" in the Irish mob take down the gang.

100 - Thief (Boston Underworld, #5) A. Zavarelli ConRom/Crime 4 stars: See above. Heroines might be in danger but they aren't pushovers. Also, these books are pretty raw--violence and sexually.

    99 - Saint (Boston Underworld, #4) A. Zavarelli ConRom/Crime 5 stars: See above.

I currently have KILL THE QUEEN by Jennifer Estep loaded on Audible. The newest book in the series release Tuesday, I think. Estep has created a really interesting fantasy world full of court intrigue, spies, various magical abilities and creatures. I'd recommended this book on a blog asking for recommendations for books similar in plot and relationship to Madmatigan/Sorcha vibes from the movie "Willow." In QUEEN, she's a minor royal with an unusual power. He's a gladiator/mercernary with secrets. There's a "Red Wedding" (Game of Thrones reference) type of massacre and she escapes. She ends up in the gladiator troupe to which he belongs and he has to teach her how to be a gladiator. I couldn't find anything else the piqued my interest and I'm waiting on my next hold to drop from the library so I'll start QUEEN.

Have a Happy and Safe! 4th of July! And happy reading.
