Saturday Reading Wrap-up - 8/15/20

Hello!  It's Reading Wrap-up time again!  Yay!

Okay so maybe it wasn't a great week for reading, but it's morning.  I have coffee and a cigarette and  woke up this morning, so life is good.

I picked up one new ebook this week.  It's the first in a cozy mystery series my mom's been reading and enjoying.  Lucky for me, the first one was on sale because the rest are $7.99.  Most likely I'll read this one and, whether I enjoy it or not, skip the rest.  All apologies to the author, but I can't afford $8 a book, let alone the $64 for the rest of the series.  Damn you, Penguin.

Oh, and I forgot... I managed to slip into a thrift store last week and picked up three new old paperbacks - Dick Francis, Michael Crichton, and Phyllis Whitney.  I don't recall having read any of these titles, so yay.

Books Read:
Nothing finished this week.

DNFS:

8/12/20 - free - supernatural thriller.  The premise seemed interesting and the writing was okay, but I didn't like the characters.

8/10/20 - free - urban fantasy.  Argh.  Do the world a favor and hire an editor for pitysakes.  The number of GLARING mistakes in the first few pages alone should be sufficient cause for death by white-out.  And it really sucks because the premise sounded good and with some basic proofreading, it could be a fun book.

8/8/20 - free - mystery.  OMG, maybe if you spent less time telling me how virtuous your character was on the hotbutton issues of the times, and got to the damn story, I would've gone further than a few pages into your book.  I want to read a mystery, damn it, not be preached to.  Blerg.

Currently reading...  Dream of Orchids by Phyllis A. Whitney.

What did you read this week?  Anything good?

  1. This was a slow week for me. I only listened to two complete books but then Stormy was hereso there was that. Both books came from the library, both new books. One was a new-to-me author, the other was tried and true. I also finished a book last Saturday, after the roundup. I can't remember if I mentioned it or not. New release (from the library), known author, mostly disappointing. Three chapters in, I didn't care much about the characters. Put the narration on fast forward and "skimmed" through to parts that seemed interesting. Predictable and I still didn't connect with the characters. Gave me a big ol' sad because the premise (mercenary librarians and supersoldiers) was awesome. Oh well. Now, to the books I enjoyed:

    1) The Last Smile in Sunder City, Luke Arnold, fantasy. 4.5 stars. New-to-me author, though he is an actor of some fame and he narrated the book, and was awesome! Magic has died and all the magical folk are paying the price. Some died where they stood, others are slowly and painfully fading away. Fetch, the MC, was a soldier and in on killing the magic and he shoulders a huge ol' bunch of guilt. He's a PI now. I really didn't know where the book was going, if there'd be easy answers (there weren't) and all the secondary characters were fully-fleshed out. There was a hint and what might become a romance if this is a series. I enjoyed this nice change of pace.

    2. When He's Dark (Olympus Pride #1), Susanne Wright, paranormal romace, 4 stars. I've read several of her other series. These are VERY sexy and sometimes dark books and predictable for the most part but there's always a bit of humor, some snark, action, and a HEA at the end. No real cliffhangers, also good. As an author, she's dependable. I'm almost always going to enjoy her books.

Currently, I'm back to IN DEATH. Again. LOL Picking back up with Visions in Death because my holds from the library dropped. I have no more holds at the moment and my next preorder drops in 10 days. After Visions, I'll relisten to the previous 4 books in The Hidden Legacy series before the new book drops.

Cheers to a week filled with words--whether writing them or reading/listening to them!
