This n That Thursday

I don't know where the time goes.  Seriously.  No Clue.  It was Sunday.  I remember Sunday.  Now it's Thursday.  I know I did stuff in between, but not the stuff I was supposed to do.

Someone somewhere here in the Ozarks found a two-headed snake.  I wonder if they realize it's actually conjoined twin snakes?  Two brains equals two individuals.

Individuals.  I'm big on individuals.  Each one of us is a separate human being - an island unto ourselves.  Yeah, yeah, I've heard the whole 'no man is an island' thing, but I don't agree.  We're all islands and we can build bridges from island to island, but we cannot be absorbed into one big mainland.  Unless we try to become like that two-headed snake.  Jus' sayin'.

I'm working on too little sleep again.  Can ya tell?

I didn't win the lottery again.  Oh, and if I happen to not say that during one of these things, it doesn't mean I won that week.  So don't come looking for gifties.  I don't have any.  ;o)

I was reading an old crime novel last night (Cape Fear by John D. MacDonald).  I love old novels.  It's amazing the things you find in them - like a passage denouncing the education system in the fifties.  I did some research back when I worked for a private school corporation, and from that research, I learned the fifties was about when 'progressive education' gained its foothold on American schools.  Later in the book there was a passage where the teen daughter is talking to her father about things she'd been taught - like in English class her teacher taught them that only bad writers make characters who are totally evil or totally good.  And then father ruminates on how the man who is stalking them is totally evil.  I thought it was kinda brilliant of the author to weave that in there.  I believe there are totally evil people and I try to write them. (It's not as easy as it sounds - especially when the drift has been toward making villains sympathetic in some way.) If that makes me a 'bad writer' in the eyes of some, I can live with that.

In a good character, something not-so good is considered a character flaw.  So, in an evil character, would something good be a character flaw for them?  Just something to ponder.

Yesterday, I caught part of a show that detailed the last 24 hours of a death row inmate.  Totally engrossing.  Especially the part of the different methods of execution and the part about last meals.  (Texas has done away with letting the condemned order a special last meal.  They get to eat what everyone else is eating.  Aside from losing the interesting information about who ate what, I think it's a good idea.)

What's on the this-n-that in your world today?

    1. Oh man, JB. I finished it last night and it was awesome. I wish I'd read it years ago. Definitely a keeper. =o)

  2. Progressives make me nervous--wherever they're sticking in their noses.

That two-headed snake could get people talking about the end times again. You know, that whole Garden of Eden gig, the devil, etc. Plus it just ain't natural... *rolls eyes*

It hasn't even been a year since I did rereads of my Chicken Soup books. I find my finger hovering over the download button of any number of them on my Kindle. Not sure that's good or bad...

I was up before dawn. The world seems so peaceful as it goes from dark to light. As long as I don't turn on the news or look at the internet...

I'm ready for fall. Got another week of summer digging in by it's long, stabby fingernails. If I had hobnail boots, I'd stamp on summer's hands.

Did I mention I'm sleep deprived?

Why yes, yes I am. *wanders off to find coffee*

    1. Welcome, my sleep-deprived sister. :hugs: I'm with you on the progressives thing. The snake = Armageddon thing slays me. Yeah, I didn't even think of that. ROFL

Maybe you need some chicken soup. Or a hug. I love the quiet of early morning. I'd love to sleep more, but hey, it's a trade off. I'm so ready for fall, too.

  3. I hadn't thought about two heads meaning conjoined twin snakes. There's a story in there... A plot bunny, at least. :-)

I know what you mean about time disappearing. Wasn't it just January?

    I finished rereading HP7. It broke my writing slump! I loved 1-3, hated 4-6, and couldn't remember 7 at all. Oh! That's why Snape's a hero. ;-)

    1. I think if it was an inert head, it would just be an anomaly, but if both heads function, it's a twin. Don't know for sure.

Ugh, yes. It was just January.

Yay for breaking the slump! I liked all of the HP books, but I get it. And you know, I can't remember 7 either - which is why I needed another copy so I can read it again. But I have to read all the others first, so it probably won't get read until next year.

  4. Hmmm... what's in my this and that today? Had a doctor appointment on base. Then had to be evacuated because someone left a suspicious package in the dental clinic. Fun times! Ended up being nothing (thank God!).

My husband texted me while I was at the hospital that he forgot his walking gear and would I bring it to him. Sure, why not? It's not like I have to write or anything.

I came home to find stink bugs in my house. They apparently like to live in the crack of my back door. Ugh.

Hubby came home at the regular time. Decided not to walk after all! Argh!

You can bet I didn't get much writing done and win! Too bad no one will take that bet against you. :)

Here's hoping Friday turns out more productive.

  5. Freaky 2 headed snake - and disturbing on many levels.

I've been away this week. My son graduated from university so we went up to the ceremony. So proud, not only of my son but all the others who graduated. Now if only he could get a job!

Taught myself to crochet granny squares and I'm up to 12 now, getting better and better. No quicker, but better.

And it's starting to get chilly in the mornings as autumn kicks in. Had New England Butternut Squash soup for dinner last night and it was delicious. I must look on google maps and find out where New England is - as opposed to England where I already am. I'm shutting up now ....

    1. I think it was a rat snake, Fran, so pretty innocuous - unless you're like Hubs and hate snakes. In which case... :hugs: Yay for your son graduating! Ugh, getting a job afterwards is the kicker. Good luck to him!

Yay for the granny squares. My sister used to be a whiz at those, but I never could manage it. I can only do single chain - back and forth, back and forth. Great for scarves and blankets, but not much else.

Thank goodness for cooler Autumn weather and hot soup! New England is the closest part of the USA to you. It encompasses the states of Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. They just sort of lump those together and call it New England. Back then, people were big on NEW this and NEW that.

And you don't need to shut up. You're fun. =o)
