I saw something on FB yesterday. A writer is self-isolating at her vacation home in another state and has been there for almost a month. She went somewhere and got back to her car to find a series of notes telling her to go home, that she wasn't wanted in their state, etc. etc. etc. How ridiculous. Ugh. Seriously. I live in MO, but only about two miles from the border of AR, and I like the AR store better than the closest one here. (The drive up there sucks and it is still farther away then the AR store.) I swear if I come out of Wallyworld to find a note like that on my car, I'm gonna go apeshit. Of course, about half the cars at Wallyworld on any given day are MO cars. And OK cars. And a few TX cars. So the chances of nasty notes are slim. If I lived in a city, I'd shelter here, too. Still only one case in my county, one case in the county where I get gas, and one in the county in the AR where I shop.
I read a headline a couple days ago about a band of people in some state (Rhode Island? Vermont?) who are forcibly isolating out-of-towners. I didn't read the story, but the implications there... Ugh. You try to forcibly isolate me, I'm bringing you up on charges.
The other day, an old woman was killed for not staying 6 ft away from people. I also read a story about a man killing his family and then himself to protect them from the coronavirus.
If you wonder why I call these posts, the Chaos Diaries, think about it for a sec. The virus isn't what's causing this crap. Fear. Ignorance. Misinformation. Assumptions. Outright lies. You fear a zombie apocalypse? Well, this is as close as you're gonna get. People are turning into zombies - brainless, mindless drones acting on impulse. The only difference - well, except for the whole not eating each other yet - is there's a cure for this. It's called REASON. Hell, maybe the justification for zombies eating brains is because they have none of their own.
Recently saw where one county in CA is making it mandatory to wear a mask if you step outside your house and if you don't, you face a $1000 fine. Thank goodness I don't live there. I'm not wearing a mask, and will only do so under extreme duress -. like if they say you have to or you 1) will get fined, 2) will get arrested, 3) can't shop without one. You see, I have this thing where I can't have anything over my mouth or I panic like I'm about to suffocate. Rationally, I know I can breathe just fine, but it's not the rational part of my brain at work here. Just the thought of wearing a mask makes me palpitate. Happy to stay 6 ft away from people, though. Ten feet is better. A mile would be fine.
As for me, I grabbed the Owl and went fishing yesterday. Well, first we stopped at the bank and I got to see my bestie for the first time in two weeks - through the glass of the drive-thru window. I miss seeing her in person and getting a hug. =o(
Anyway... It was good to be at the lake. There were people, but they were either putting their boat in or taking it out and no one but Owl got anywhere near me. She didn't fish. I wanted to see if she'd enjoy it before I slapped down the $50 for a license for her. She said she liked it, insomuch as she watched me catch a fish and stood around at the lake, so I'll get a license - online, of course.
Tomorrow, I go out amongst people. While talking with my bestie, she said she'd been to our Wallyworld since the new rules were in place and it wasn't too bad, so I have hope.
In other news, Mom and Sis are having a tough time finding TP. Mom isn't going out - Sis is doing all the shopping for both of them now. She found one 4 roll package of shitty TP for them both. Not sure what their supply was like and how long that'll last. Come on, people, leave some TP on the shelves for people who need it. Surely your supplies are such now that you don't need to hoard more. Mom's sure people are buying it up and selling it at a huge markup. She's probably right.
Okay, time to let you all go about your day. Have as good a one as you can out there in the chaos. We're holding the fort here.

The Chaos Diaries - 4/6/20
Here we are again on day whatever of the chaos.
It has been decided that I will go to the store on Wednesday. And this was decided before I heard that Senior hour is a madhouse. (Thanks for that info, Deb.) It just makes more sense when all factors are considered.
I am a wee bit concerned that I will be going to Wallyworld without a mask - not because I'm afraid I'll catch it but because I'm afraid of panicky people. It doesn't help that I cough because I smoke. The chance of me catching this in a county where there has been like 1 case is really low. The chance that I will be attacked in some way because I coughed in a store is higher. I'll be carrying cough drops with me.
I was in the Dollar General the other day. One woman had a surgical mask on. One woman had a winter scarf wrapped around her face. And a man was wearing this high-tech mini-goalie mask thing over his mouth and nose. Out of maybe 8-10 people in the whole store. Scary shit, man. Not the disease = people's reactions to the chaos.
One of the things that gets me about all this is the total lack of real information. So much of what's out there conflicts what else is out there. Agencies we're supposed to trust contradict themselves. And it doesn't seem to be based on data or reality. It seems to be based on whatever way the wind is blowing. It's all very confusing.
Hubs is reading me a list of National Parks they've closed. National Parks, people. Where generally you're not within 6 ft of anyone - except where tourists glut together for pictures. They closed all the rest huts and bathrooms on the Appalachian Trial, where I'm pretty sure you won't see another human being all day. No walking outside dammit. He just said they closed Death Valley. We had a little laugh about that one.
Locally, there have been reports of people gathering and not social distancing at boat ramps. I understand the idea. Humans are not made for isolation. Americans aren't made for obeying orders. And around here, the tendency is to NOT trust the government about anything. Put those things together and you've got people flipping the bird at the chaos rules. Hell, I'm halfway tempted to flip the bird at them, too. If this goes on long enough, expect even the law-abiding citizens to say 'fuck you, I'm going outside'.
Most of my obeying of the chaos rules comes from the fact that it would wreck me if I brought this crap home to Hubs and now the Owl. Mama Bear doesn't want to see her family sick. Sure, I don't want to get sick either, but it's more about them than me.
How are things with you out there?

Sunday Update - Week 13
Well, that was a Week 13 if I ever saw one.
Still no writing, editing, or marketing. I keep telling myself I'm going to do something writerly, but then when the rubber meets the road, I can't get any traction. I need to do something because it's been about a month since I sold any books.
My reading week was weird. A bunch of DNFs and then I read two books in a series back to back, which I almost never do. Good series, though. I wish I had the budget to buy the next three books, but I have other things I need to spend that $12 on right now.
You've already heard about life in the chaos this week, so I'll skip that. There'll be another Chaos Diaries post tomorrow.
I made another chocolate oil cake this week. And another batch of granola bars. I have just enough ingredients to make another batch of granola bars, but I'm out of baker's cocoa, so no more of that cake for a while. I might make applesauce bread this week.
They will be shutting down Missouri effective tomorrow, but they left a nice wrinkle - we can still outdoor recreate (as long as we follow the chaos rules), which means I could conceivably go fishing. You know, if it ever stops raining and warms back up because I have no urge to freeze my ass off right now. Maybe today. Perhaps tomorrow.
Hubs and I are in discussions as to who's going shopping this week. He says him because he can get in at 6am on Tuesday. I say me because I know where everything is and can get in and out quicker. I really wish I could trust the local grocery store to not poison me, so I could have an alternative to Walmart. Oh, in case you hadn't heard, Walmart has new shopping guidelines that went into effect yesterday. There's a set number of people allowed into the store at any given time and once that number is reached, you have to wait until someone leaves before they'll let you in. Should be interesting.
Lastly, everyone here is well. And everyone I'm related to is well as of Friday when I talked to Mom. I hope all the people I care about beyond that are healthy as well, but since I only communicate with most of them online or face to face (which I can't do anymore), I only know about them if I hear from them. If you're reading this and you don't usually comment, drop a quick 'Fine here.' in the comments so I know you're okay. Okay?

Saturday Reading Wrap-up - 4/4/20
Hello again. You'd think I'd be reading more during this self-isolation thing, but this week didn't pan out like I'd hoped.
I've been scanning through the free books trying to find something to read. I found three on Sunday, but not much since then. I'm down to one unread ebook from that score. Of course, I still have scads of hardcopy books to read, so it's not critical or anything.
Books Read:
32) Pushing Daisy by Scott Baron (4/3/20) - SF*2 - 5 stars. Not new to me since this is a book 2, but underappreciated. I noticed this one was free when I downloaded the first book.
Review: "Excellent! I loved this sequel! But there were a lot of things left unanswered here - not a cliffhanger, per se, just threads still dangling. Good thing the next is already available."
Note: At this time, getting books 3-5 is not in the budget, but once this whole thing settles down, I'll be swooping back around.
31) Daisy's Run by Scott Baron (4/2/20) - SF* - 5 stars. New to me but not underappreciated. Free from the Robin Reads newsletter.
Review: "Interesting and well thought out book. I enjoyed the story, too. Okay, so sometimes I wanted to smack Daisy, but I came to understand why she was sometimes smackable, so it's all good. Onward to Book 2, which I already downloaded and accidentally started first, which kind of left me expecting events not yet foreshadowed. Derp."
DNFs:
3/29/20 - Future Suspense. Free. I think the author should've just written a modern-day suspense because the MC was 'old school' about everything and shunned the latest technologies, so why are they even there? That and he, a police detective, and his partner did something too stupid for either of them to live right there at the beginning. Blerg.
3/29/20 - Mystery. Free. Gah. The 'banter' between the MC and her best friend was annoying the hell out of me, but I persevered. The story itself was really good for a while there and then the banter started up again. If the MC thinks so little of her BFF and they're constantly sniping at each other, why the hell are they friends? I hate that.
3/28/20 - Fantasy. Free. I don't know. It just wasn't thrilling me enough to encourage me to read further. And it was confusing. Is the first scene part of the story or is the whole thing a story within a story or what? Too much brain needed. Didn't want to brain.
3/28/20 - Memoir. Free. Ugh, it so needed someone to say 'stop with the parentheses already'. Like every other sentence they had some comment offset by (). (Psst. I think they were trying to be folksy in their style, but it was too much).
Currently reading... I picked up the next Vince Flynn book in line. Love me some Mitch Rapp.

The Chaos Diaries - 4/3/20
Not really that chaotic a post today. Just life as we now know it.
I'm dropping into some kind of stasis where I just get over it. Music too loud? Get over it. Noise at night? Get over it. News all bad and not getting better? Get over it. My little corner of the world not as tidy as it used to be? Get over it. Out of milk? Get over it.
Okay, that last one is something I can do something about. Kinda. I have to go out today and get cigarettes* so since I'm already breaking self-isolation protocols, I'll see what the Dollar General has available for milk and eggs and other things we're getting low on already. Food stores purchased for two now stretching to feed three and all that.
The Night Owl made dinner the other night. Chicken alfredo. It was really good. And all I could think of afterward was how the meal had depleted my cheese stores. Yesterday, she asked if she could make herself an egg for breakfast and I was all like no. Maybe if I find eggs at the store today, she can have one for breakfast tomorrow.
I lost seven pounds last month.
Recently, I read an article wherein I learned this isn't stress. It's anxiety. Cool. Always good to have the right name for the thing.
Right now, we have extra channels on Direct TV. From the Premium line up when we only have Choice. I've been watching a lot of DIY and Oxygen and Destination. They're also throwing us bones of pay movie channels here and there, but there's never anything to watch on those. Still, nice to have other options.
And that's about it for now. This weekend, I'll do the usual Saturday Reading Wrap-up and Sunday Update posts. We'll see what the weekend brings and whether I do another Diary post on Monday.
Meanwhile, how's the chaos treating you lately?
* Don't go there. Seriously. Quitting is not an option. The safety of mankind depends on my continuing to smoke.

Thursday This n That
I woke up this morning to a comment on one of my Goodreads reviews. It was some guy trying to get me to buy his book - if you liked this, try mine. Not cool, dude. Even if it was a trad pub and the author is making tons of money, which this wasn't, not cool. Piggybacking your sales off another indie author's work is totally not cool.
It's early and I haven't had enough coffee, so obviously, I'm not too eloquent yet.
I saw the first deer showing her pregnancy. Nice to see the fat bellies starting to arrive. Love me some fawns.
The Night Owl made dinner last night. Chicken Alfredo. It was pretty darn good. And I made a chocolate cake yesterday, so it was like a holiday or something. Which it kinda was because it was the 16th anniversary of the day I met Hubs in person.
I'm trying not to mention the elephant in the room today. I wish it would just go away.
Hubs and I took a walk after dinner, just the two of us. It's not that we don't have any alone time anymore, because Owl is mostly in her room on the computer, but it was nice.
I saw a yellow-bellied sapsucker the other day. I was surprised it hadn't migrated yet. The eagles are already gone.
My hawk scratches are nothing more than pink lines now. If they scar, the scars won't last long.
Yesterday, I saw something on FB about someone threatening an author with one-star reviews if they didn't take down their opinion post. No mention of the author's name, so no chance of boosting them up to defeat the asshole, but a lot of comments from people who wanted to. And comments from people who wanted to shitstorm the asshole. Beware the power of pissed off people stuck at home. By the way, threatening an author with one-star reviews is also not cool.
If this should ever happen to you, get a screenshot of the threat, so if the reviews do start coming, you can send the threat to Amazon and get the reviews removed.
I have no idea what I'm going to do for dinner tonight.
There's an interesting moth fluttering around my bathroom window. Something you may not know about me is I used to have a moth phobia. Not paralyzing fear, but yelping and waving my arms like a fool was not out of the question. They still kind of creep me out, but I spent a lot of time working on it so they don't scare me anymore. Okay, so maybe if one lands on me unexpectedly, I still shriek and go all ninja. Butterflies? No problem. Moths? :shudder: Silly phobias.

The Chaos Diaries - 4/1/20
Today is the end of Week 1 with The Night Owl living with us again. It's an adjustment for us all. And I still have to keep reminding myself that while she is my child, she is not a child.
Last night was not a good night. I haven't been sleeping well. I thought once I got past the chaos of last week, the stress levels would go down. I've been trying to walk or get outside and get some exercise every day. Owl and I took a walk after dinner that ended up being longer than I'd planned because we were chatting and the next thing I knew we'd gone farther than I wanted to, which meant we had to walk back from there. That alone should've knocked me right out. Nope. No matter how tired the body is, the brain won't shut up.
I started likening it to a hamster running on its wheel. Lately, the hamster's whole family has taken up residence in my head. A dozen wheels and when I get one to stop running another starts up again. According to Mom, I come by this honestly - Dad was the same way.
Every day, our elderly neighbors get in their car and go somewhere. I don't know about her, but he's had some major health problems over the years. One would think they'd be more cautious. If anyone around here is going to get it, it's going to be them. They're the canary in our coal mine. Of course, right now, there's only one case in our county and one in the county next door, so maybe he's not taking as big of a risk as we think he is. Time will tell. I really hope they don't get it.
Hubs talked with his mom and his brothers. So far, they're all well. I talk to my mom almost every day, and she talks to everyone else in the family, so I know they're all good. My oldest sister is head of maintenance and housekeeping for a large hospital and she's running ragged right now. Ten hour days, seven days a week. Mom's sister is trapped in an assisted living facility that is shut down to outside visitors. The only people she sees now are the ones who deliver her food and I don't imagine they're staying to chat. She's used to her daughter coming by often but that's screwed up now. So, she opens her apartment door and the woman across the hall opens hers and they chat across the divide when they can.
Okay, I guess it's time to start my day. I'm not sure if I'll do these diary things daily or not. I'd like to find something else to talk about, but the hamsters are single-minded right now.
What's up with you?
