Jumping Numbers

I'm not sure exactly what happened yesterday.  I was doing my usual thing, posting to FB groups - 1 every fifteen minutes to avoid getting my paddies smacked by FB's gulag rules - when I noticed an uptick in downloads.  I was all like 'whoa' because in a short time, I'd moved like 20 copies.  Cool, thinks I.

But it didn't stop there.  The numbers kept rising...  throughout the rest of the day and night, as a matter of fact.  I'd moved 12 copies on Monday.  As of this morning, I've moved 463 copies of Dying Embers in 24 hours.

Of course, all of those are free, but it gives me hope that at least some of those people will read it and go on to order FG and EG.  (One person already did order the other two books at full price, so I've got that going for me.)  I also have hope that it has brought DE high enough up in the rankings that the KU people will see it and start reading the book, too.  Every page read adds up there.

I'm just a little dumbfounded.  I've had this happen a couple times before.  TTW got a boost somehow and moved like 100 copies in one day.  Still, I've never had a book move this much in this short a time since I paid ENT for an ad.

Anyway, it's pretty exciting.  I'd share the magic with you, if I knew what the magic was.  I know yesterday I tried something different and hit the specialized FB groups (thriller, suspense type groups) with ads.  Maybe that was the cause of the initial jump and, once DE started to rise in the rankings, that took over.  Maybe I have a fairy god-newsletter that advertises my books without me knowing or paying for it.  Either way, it does feel good to see the numbers jump like that.

Doesn't change anything with regard to yesterday's post, but still...

Thursday This n That

Wow.  I mean, just... wow.  The freebie thing for DYING EMBERS shot off like a freakin' rocket this week.  When I checked the stats this morning, my orders said 777.  705 of that is DE.  (71 was from last weeks freebie of PH. And I sold one FG.)  I've never moved that many copies of anything at one time.  Hell, I haven't moved that many copies of all of my books in an entire year since my first year. That year, I moved like 1016, which is fewer books than I've given away this year.  I am shocked.  This is my wow-face =oO.  Anyway, thank you.  Thanks to all of you who've read my books, and to all of you who've downloaded my books, and to all of you who've reviewed my books.  You're all awesome and I love you. :HUGS:  You're really making my anniversary special.  Special thanks to Silver and Debs and Janet for sticking with me all the way.  You guys rock.

Today is officially the 10th anniversary of DE going out into the world.  On 2/13/15, it went live on Amazon and I got my very first sale ever.  Woot.

Speaking of sales, I've officially made more money this year than all of 2023.  Sure, it's $28.82 vs $28.08, but we have to take our little successes where we can find them, eh?

Man, these last few years have been a little depressing for me with regards to being a writer.  I mean, I haven't broken $100 since 2021.  The last year I made more than my average of $400/year was 2019.  But there's always hope.  And more than a little of a masochistic nature, LOL.

Okay, enough about that... I think I might've already mentioned it, but I made carrot cake.  It was good but unimpressive the first day.  Every day, it's gotten a wee bit yummier, though.  Mmmm.  Next time, I definitely need to add raisins.  I do love me some raisins.

The weather here has been gross.  Wet and cold and icy.  Blerg.  Good thing I got all my errands done over the weekend or we'd be screwed.  Eh, it's all about planning ahead when you live in the back of beyond.

Ack.  I need to wrap this up so I can call Mom.  It's a thing.  Every morning M-Th, I call her at 7am and we talk for an hour.  She's 84 and, let's face it, she's not going to be here forever, so I like to get as much chatting in as I can.  Plus, I really enjoy our conversations.  There's no better way to start the day for me.  (I also call her on Saturday, but that's at 7:45.  She gets Fridays and Sundays off from me. LOL)

And with that I bid you all adieu.  Have a great day wherever you are!

Marketing Monday - 10th Anniversary!

Hey all.  This week I'll see the 10th Anniversary of being a published author.  On 2/13/15, DYING EMBERS was pushed into the world.  So...

To celebrate my tenth anniversary as a published author, this week DYING EMBERS is absolutely free. (Always free on Kindle Unlimited.) It's been a helluva journey. Thanks for sharing it with me.

And it has been one hell of a journey.  Who knew when I started this writing thing back in January of 2004 - that's right, I've been at this for 21 years now - that I'd be a self-published author with sales and reviews and junk?  I certainly didn't.  Of course, when I started writing back in 2004, I thought that I'd be represented by an agent and have loads of traditional book sales by now.

We all know how that turned out, eh?

Anyway, I'll talk more about that in the week to come.  Until then, pick up a copy of Dying Embers and enjoy my gift to you.  And if you enjoy it, pay it backward by leaving a review.  ;o)

Sunday Update - Week 23

Hey there, hi there, ho there.  It's time to wrap this past week up.

I only wrote on one day this past week, but I laid down about a thousand new words and found a place for a scene I'd written a while back, giving me a net gain of about 2700 words.  On SCUI4.   Gotta go where the inspiration strikes these days.

Perhaps inspiration struck on that because I actually did some marketing.  I posted on Thursday night/Friday morning about Dying Embers being only 99c and sold 3 books.  One each of the series, so yay.  I need to slap some more posts out there.

In reading news, I only finished one book, but it was a good one.  I also started reading a suspense yesterday.  So far, so good.

On the baking front, I made carrot cake!  I'd never made one before, but I got the idea that I wanted to make one, so I went looking for recipes.  And the ones I found that I liked called for way more carrots than I had in the house.  So, when I went shopping on Thursday the idea was to buy another bag or two.  The little bags looked piddlin' and doing a cost comparison, it just made more sense to pick up the big bag.  The FIVE POUND bag.  I already had a pound of carrots - I didn't realize the little bags had 16 oz - so 6 pounds of carrots total.  I spent yesterday morning cleaning and shredding carrots.  One big carrot yielded 1 cup of shredded.  One carrot.  I cleaned probably 10-12 carrots to start and still had about 3/4 of the 5 lb bag untouched.  Anyway, I got my 4 cups of shredded carrot.  Plus two quart baggies of carrot sticks.  Then I made the cake.  It turned out amazing, by the way.  Recipe below.

I'm still falling down on the activity thing.  Only one day wherein I walked the loop.  So 1.1 miles added to the total.  19.3 miles for the year.  That's kind of pitiful.   I did finally weigh myself and I'm holding steady, though.  Weight: 181.6.  Unfortunately, not moving is making me squonky.  Not that I didn't get a boatload of upper body exercise grating those carrots, but that's not quite the cardio I'm going for.

I did something else this week that I've been thinking about for a while now.  I'm not ready to talk about it and nothing may come of it anyway.  No, it's not anything bad or medical.  Or relationship related.  Okay, fine.  I applied for a job.  The right job came along and I had to go for it.  If anything, I'm overqualified for it and my resume will probably freak the people out.  But it's like 2 miles from here and it utilizes my office skills with some new stuff thrown in to make it interesting.  And hey, it might even help add a new flavor element to my writing.   Like I said, nothing may come of it.  If something does come of it, I'll let you know because changes will have to be made.  Anyway, I'm kind of excited.

Speaking of excitement, we found a big ol' rat snake in the garage this week.  He was probably 5-6'.  There were some comical elements to his removal, but we finally got him outside.  Hubs then proceeded to spray the area to deter the snake from coming back.

Also, exciting... we have a fawn!  And it's Lumpy's!  Yay!

Okay, that's more than enough out of me this morning.  Thanks for reading all the way down to here and I hope you have an awesome day.  How was your week?

Recipe:

Best Ever Carrot Cake

2 cups flour

2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp cinnamon

2 cups sugar

4 eggs

1 1/3 cup vegetable oil

4 cups grated carrots

3/4 cup raisins

Preheat oven to 350F.  Coat bottom of 9x13" pan with cooking spray.  Plump raisins, drain, and set aside.  In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.  Set aside.  In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light and fluffy.  Beat in oil.  By thirds, stir in dry ingredient mixture.  Fold in carrots and raisins until just combined.  Spread evenly into prepared pan.  Bake for 40-45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.  Cool completely and frost with cream cheese frosting.

Sunday Update - Week 5

Five weeks into 2021.  I'm trying to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.  So, basically, nothing new.

I'm not currently in writing mode, so don't expect any of that any time soon.  As for editing, I pulled my head out of the mire and got back to work.  I'm at 48% done with my first round.  Pages and pages of notes accumulated.  Some of it as simple as adding or deleting a comma.  Some of it as deep as rewriting whole scenes.  (Just the note to do it, not actually rewriting it yet.)

As for marketing, Dying Embers goes on sale Wednesday to celebrate its book birthday on Saturday.  Just the one book this time.  It'll be 99c/99p through the 16th.

Once again, I only finished one book in reading last week.  It was a REALLY good one, though.  I'd totally recommend it.  (And it is in Audio format, for them what does that.  Warning: if you follow the link, the description has spoilers.  Damn them.)

In baking news, I made a meatloaf (recipe below) and a batch of drop biscuits.

On the activity front, I cleaned and organized three times and walked once.  Eh, it's better than nothing.  Weight 182.2.

It's been almost two weeks since we lost Kira.  It's still pretty hard to not wake up thinking I have to feed her or take her to the litterbox.  Or to look for her when I get ready for bed.  It still throws me when I walk into the office and she's not laying on her bed.  And to not look at her dishes and think that she needs kibbles.  Yes, her dishes are still out.  So's her litterbox.  Seeing those spots empty would be sadder than having those things in place right now.  I've been obsessed with thinking about dogs.  I need to stop that.  We can't have a dog right now, for most of the same reasons we couldn't get one before.  With the exception of not wanting to stress out Kira.  I still don't have the time, the patience, or the fundage to have a pooch.  I'm being an adult here.  Sometimes being an adult sucks, but it's better to be one than to regret not being one.  Once upon a time, I had two dogs and in retrospect, I never should've gotten them.  I didn't have the time to devote to them.  I know better now.

Okay, I think that's it for me today.  How was your Week 5?

Recipe:

Meatloaf

1 - 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 tube saltine crackers (crushed)
1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup
1 egg
salt and pepper to taste
Parmesan cheese (the dry stuff)

Preheat oven to 275F.  In a large bowl, combine all ingredients but the Parmesan - using your hands to squish it all together.  When it's all combined, squish in enough Parmesan to make the mixture dry enough to form a ball - usually about a quarter cup for me.  (The wetness of the mixture will depend on what grade beef you use, how much beef there is to mushroom soup, how big the egg is, etc.  Too wet a meatloaf won't hold its shape, hence the Parmesan.) Spray the inside of of whatever baking receptacle (I use a blue glass casserole dish) you're using with non-stick cooking spray.  Bake for 2.5 hours uncovered.  Slice and serve.  Great hot.  Awesome cold for sandwiches.  Also yummy inside a grilled cheese sandwich.

Merry Christmas Eve. Here's a Present.

Since my writing is really the only gift I have to give, starting today the book that started it all, DYING EMBERS, is free.  (And the other two SCIU books - FERTILE GROUND and EARLY GRAVE - are only 99c.)

DE is free through Saturday.  FG and EG are on sale through Monday night.  Grab one or grab them all.  If you already have them, thank you so much.  Your support means the world to me.  I wish I had a prezzie to give you, too.  :hugs:

Merry Christmas to you and all of your loved ones.  Here's to a Happy New Year for us all.

Sunday Update - Week 36

How did it get to be Sunday again already?  Arrgghh.

Let's not talk about writing, shall we?

I have another sale starting Tuesday with advertising going out Thursday.  Dying Embers will be the advertised sale at 99c/99p.  The other two books, Fertile Ground and Early Grave, will be $1.99 (or the UK equivalent) each.  Whether I get much chance to market these on FB will depend on our justice system and how long this jury thing lasts.

Did a fair amount of reading.  Finished 4, DNF'd 3.

More granola bars were made.

On the activity front, 6 out of 7 days.  More cleaning and walking.  One day of grocery shopping, which I counted this time around because... well... you try pushing a cart with a 24 pack of water, three big jugs of apple juice, two big jugs of orange juice, and a week's worth of other groceries around Wallyworld.  And the cart didn't want to make right turns.  Ugh.  If that wasn't burning calories, I don't know what would be.

No fishing.  With the holiday weekend, I didn't want to be anywhere near the lake.  And then it was too freakin' hot and I had stuffs to do in the mornings.  =o\

The fawns are losing their spots and growing.  A few are about 2/3 size of the does now.  The other day we had 10 does and 7 fawns in the yard.  It's a bumper crop.  Yay.

I got my files backed up.  If you haven't backed up lately, this might be a reminder.  :poke:

And that's it for me.  Not a whole lot going on in Sandersonville.  How about your ville?

Sunday Update - Week 6

Howdy.

Last week.  Let's see...

I just did the math and I ended week 6 with 7215 words written on Wish Hits the Fan for a total of 15089.  I would've gotten more out last night, but I needed to do some research to make it make sense.  Now it makes sense.  And it ties back to earlier in the story arc when I mentioned something that was never address to this point.  Ah, the things my subconscious mind layers in that I have to later figure out what the hell I was thinking.

I've been working on some marketing to go along with tomorrow's 2-year anniversary of Dying Ember being published.  I have one ad going out today with Reading Deals and another one going out tomorrow with Booktastik.  I'll let you know how those go.  Oh, and both Dying Ember and Fertile Ground are on sale for 99c/.99p today through the 18th.  Spread it around.

After the reel debacle, I had some success fishing on Friday and Saturday.  No keepers, but bass are always fun to catch.  Now, I'd like to catch something I can eat.  I needs me some fresh fish in my belly.

The reading has, once again, slacked off as I concentrate more on my writing.  I started a book and DNF'd it.  The characters were irritating me.  Then I started Julie Seedorf's Granny Hooks a Crook (which is apparently the 2nd book... Derp.).  It's really fun, but I haven't gotten back to it in a few days.

It was 82 degrees F here yesterday.  =oO

Oh, and I got some books in the mail last week.  In Defense of Selfishness by Peter Schwartz and some Viking novel a friend had recommended (to round me up to $25 for free shipping).  I only ordered books because Amazon had sent me an email saying I'd get a $10 Kindle credit if I bought a non-fiction title.  So I did.  Then I didn't get the credit.  So I contacted Amazon via their chat help thingie.  The person insisted I got no such email.  I gave them all the particulars and then offered to forward them the email.  They gave me the credit.  Damn straight.  Well, supposedly.  They said I won't 'see' the credit anywhere.  It'll just be applied when I place an order.  I haven't done that yet, so we'll see.

That's it for me.  How was your 6th week of 2017?

Thursday, October 15, 2015

This n That Thursday

I finished the edits my editor sent me.  Now I just have a couple little things to find and change before I send it off to her on Friday night.  Yay!

I walked around the yard talking pics yesterday morning.  Here are my new mums:

Eight in all - in that order and then in reverse order.  (The last ones were supposed to bloom redder. And yes, the white ones look like daisies, but they're mums. Honest.)

Dying Embers is on sale for 99 cents - here in the US and in the UK.  Go grab a copy.  Gift a copy to your friends.  Send one to the old boyfriend or girlfriend who cheated on you in college.  You know, as a remembrance.  ;o)

LOL, no, I wouldn't do that last thing.  What's passed is in the past.  Fun thing to think about sometimes, though.  "Hey, Dork! Remember me?"  ROFL

I have a bug bite on my arm that will not go away.  It's not big and it's not painful.  Not a mosquito or a spider.  It just itches like crazy.  Bleh.

Did I mention my edits?  I'm a little cwazypants right now.  Edit brain and all that rot.

Anyway, what's the this n that in your life right now?

Sunday Update - Week 21

Yeah, yeah, it's Memorial Day Weekend.   I got stuff to do.  I don't have time to take a three day weekend.  Hell, weekends around here are pretty-much meaningless anyway.  I work all week and take time off when I want to.  In fact, if I'm lucky and the weather ever stops dumping water on us, I'm going fishing midweek this week.  I have some new artificial crawdads I want to try and I bought a package of something called GULP.  This kind looks like minnows and is supposed to 'smell' yummy to fish.

Anyway, that's for the week ahead.  Stepping into the wayback machine courtesy of Mr. Peabody and Sherman (the real ones - not the CGI of today), here's what happened last week:

Accidental Death launched!  It didn't have the minor explosion out of the gate that Dying Embers did, but it had a bigger explosion Friday, so I'm happy.  I so want this book to do well.  (I want them all to do well, but this one is closer to home for me.)  I've already sold more this month than the first month Dying Embers was out there in the world.  Yay.  And I discovered last night that the paperback is now available through Amazon, so I got that going for me.

Wish in One Hand is with the editor for a first pass.  I don't expect this one to be that in need of editing - since several people helped me edit it before I sent it to Baen - but we'll see what she has to say.  And the cover artist - Howard David Johnson - is working on that for me.  His other work is amazing and beautiful, and I have great hopes for this cover.  I expect to launch this in August - good lord willin' and the creek don't rise.  For anyone who has been following along, this book was previously known as Djinnocide, and for those that haven't, it's a paranormal suspense with genies.

I'm also working on editing Bloodflow for a fall launch.  I started playing with cover ideas yesterday.  Man, iStock is expensive.  $33 for 3 images.  Now I have to decide which three are exactly what I need so I don't waste money playing around.  Bloodflow is a political / techno suspense set in Washington, D.C. and has some delicious intrigue, vicious plots, and dead bodies (natch).

Tomorrow, keep an eye out at Ereader News Today.  My ad for Dying Embers is due to go up.

In other news, I found a three-legged, three-toed box turtle in the yard.  Little girl was marching diligently down the hill, totally unafraid of me or anything else.  She didn't even close up when I lifted her off the ground.  She hissed a little and then stared at me.  Her missing leg is an old injury and she's so over it.  I set her down and off she went.

The wildflower seeds I scattered in the cedar garden last year, that brought me lots of lovely blooms, has come back this year - despite my planting a forsythia smack in the middle and loads of marigolds around.  I have no idea what these plants are, but they're lovely.  Plus, last year's marigolds reseeded themselves, so I'll have those blooming all summer.

Oh, and finally, last night I got the writing bug.  Whew.  After however long not writing new words, it was like a damn broke.  I got a glimmer of an idea, sat down at the keyboard, and churned out 1700 words lickety-split.  I so want to tell y'all about the story, but I don't want to jinx it.  And man, let me tell ya, yesterday I was so restless I couldn't hardly stand myself.  Then I wrote and all was well.  Sometimes you just gotta let the words out or they start to drive ya nuts.  Just sayin'.

What's happening in your world lately?

Sunday Update - Week 18

Good morning, Everyone!

Yesterday, I was feeling pretty good - despite having a scratchy throat the day before (ugh, allergies) - so I went out into the world.  The first place I typically stop is the gas station for a beverage.  So, I snag a Dew and head for the cash register, contemplating whether to buy lottery tickets.  The gal at the register, who sees me about once a week, took one look at me and said something about how angry I looked.  "What's wrong?  You usually look happy when you come in here."  I laughed.  Then I told her I have what is known as 'resting bitch face'.  We laughed together and I bought two lottery tickets to go with my Dew.  (Didn't win, btw.)

A little while later after my needs were met at Wally-world, I took the leap and stopped by the local indie bookstore.  I've been wanting to stop and meaning to stop and absolutely terrified to stop for a while now.  Cuz walking into a bookstore to chat about my book scares the crap out of me.  And I told the bookstore gal that after we'd gotten to talking.  She's a really cool person.  We chatted books and authors and my work and her work.  I gave her a copy of Dying Embers and some swag to go with it.  She gave me the names of some local writerly people who might help with getting my work out there.  Then I bought some books I've been wanting - chiefly, the first three books in the Dragonlance series :happy sigh:, as well as a couple books by Sarah A. Hoyt, and the next book in the Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepherd.  Sadly, she was out of Silence of the Lambs.

In other news, this past week saw the maiden voyage of both Hubs' fishing boat and my newsletter.  We had fun on the boat and subscribers had fun with the newsletter.  It's all good.

Except Hubs and I now have the fishing bug.  Last night after dinner, we were chatting and then decided to throw the rods in the car and drive to a local spot.  We didn't catch anything, but it was lovely out, and it gave me a chance to practice casting.  I suck at that.  My reel is now a gnarly mass of knots.  It was a blast.  And we got to see the moonrise over the river.  Then we came home.

Things are ramping up for the release of Accidental Death, and to that end, I decided to lower the price of Dying Embers to .99 for the month of May.  I love May.  It's my favorite month.  So, my love of May and my excitement over the publication of my second book means readers win.  Spread the word.  (I mean, once Amazon actually updates the book's listing with the 99 cent price.)

And since Accidental Death is releasing soon, I'm moving ahead with some marketing.  I'll be on Omnimystery News this coming Friday with my cover reveal and a week later with a book excerpt.  Plus, I designed up some postcards and bookmarks for the release.  Yay!

The gal at the local bookstore thinks I need to go to a regional book event coming up in a few weeks.  I think she's probably right, but... :shudder:  It's hard to even think about putting myself out there with other writers - IN PERSON - especially after all those years of not telling most people in real life that I write books.  I'm thinking about it, though.  I mean, Tess Gerritsen's going to be there.  That alone terrifies the hell out of me... err... makes me interested in going.

Anyway, that's all I can think of write now.  I hope you all had awesome weeks last week and that this coming week is amazing for all of you.

:hugs:
