I Got Nuthin'

Seriously.  I'm tapped out.  I griped about it the other day on Twitter (and as such, Facebook), but I really do hope this is rock bottom.  Because, ya know, I feel all dessicated inside.  Dry.  Dusty.  Empty of words.  If you press your ear to my head, you'll hear the whistling wind.  If you looked in my ear, you might see tumbleweeds.

I know what I probably need to do is just chain myself to this damn chair, quit whining, and write.  Sounds good in theory.  Too bad reality has too much going on for me right now to devote any good block of time to figuring my way out of the wasteland.  Maybe this weekend I'll have a break long enough to tear through the dam.

Ever been in this place?  How'd you find your way out?

  1. Been there, done that, have the tee shirt. Have I mentioned the book I've been writing since 1993? Still not finished. Don't ask.

I wish I had a magic spell or could wave a wand or...something. No two writers have the same solution. I depend on my friends to tell me that I'm not "writing in the wilderness." And I depend on Iffy (despite how often I curse the Muse, she does come in handy!) to distract me. When I think about giving up, she slaps me in the face with a new idea. It flares in my imagination and before I know it, I have a wild fire to contain.

You have talent, lady. You have stories to tell. Don't let a drought get you down. The rains of inspiration will come and your imagination will be fertile once again.

    You can laugh now. ;-)

  2. I'm not sure I subscribe to the "force yourself to write" mantra. No matter how much we love something, there are times we simply need a break. There are many things I both like and need to do, but I can do none of them well without an occasional respite. We will take that break eventually, whether we do so willingly or not. Consider it a vacation?

  3. I've been there. I've found that writing a short story will usually open the dam, so to speak. Of course, I don't usually finish the short story, but if the novel is being written - who cares? Not me!

  4. Although I understand why people say to just sit down and write, I often find there are reasons outside of our control that prevent us from doing so. I've finally accepted that I'm so stressed I could just sleep from now until August 18th, so there's no point in pushing myself to write. Take everything one step at a time. =)

  5. We're not out either. Take Jeff's advice and take a vacation!
