Too Much Too Much Too Much

What is it with the overload of everything these days?

Bacon, pumpkin spice, red velvet... if a little is good, a lot must be better right.  Spread that shit over everything.  Seriously.  I mean, I like bacon as much as the next guy, but I don't want it in my ice cream or my donuts or my Poptarts.  I like pumpkin.  (Not pumpkin spice - cinnamon and cloves are fine, but nutmeg makes me gag.)  Pumpkin pie, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin muffins... NOT pumpkin coffee.  And sorry, but I don't get the allure of red velvet.  Meh.  But it's everywhere like someone decided it was manna from the heavens.  It's vanilla. Dyed red. Might be a little creamier, but it's still just red vanilla flavor.

Everything is overdone.  And if it's not it's X-Treme.  Bigger, bolder, spicier, more in your face.  Your tastebuds will be blown away by this latest craze.  BLOWN. AWAY.  You can't just have spicy anymore either.  You have to have ghost chili spicy.  If your tongue doesn't want to rip itself off, jump out of your mouth, and run away, you're not doing it right.

I believe it was Aristotle who said something to the effect of 'everything in moderation.'  But who cares about Aristotle.  He's some dead dude anyway. America wants what it wants in large proportions, liberally distributed through every aspect of life.  They don't want a cheeseburger. They want a 1 pound steakburger with a half-pound of cheese covered in bacon and sriracha.

We want a super-grande, double-whipped, half-caff, pumpkin-spiced latte with extra foam and sprinkles.

And that's certainly your right.

I just don't get it.  How do you taste the coffee in there?  Or the burger under all that stuff?  How can you enjoy a single strip of bacon in all its bacony wonder when everything tastes like bacon?

You know, I think back in the old days, spices were used to cover up the taste of less-than-quality meats. Would the eaters of extra-spicy, in your face seasonings and extreme flavors even know when they were eating rancid meat before they were hit with the aftereffects of it?

Me, I like to taste my food.  I like to stick with the moderation.  A little of this and a little of that goes a long way.  But that's me.  Just for petesakes, stop trying to make me eat red velvet.  Can't buy a cheesecake or muffin or petit four or donut assortment without someone sneaking red velvet in there.  Bleh.

  1. I saw red velvet cookies at Walmart yesterday. They looked like sugar cookies with red food dye. *shrug* My mother made an awesome red velvet sheet cake with fluffy white icing. Ancient recipe--like 100 years. No really. It came from my grandmother. But red velvet should be confined to that cake. And while bacon and coffee are their own food groups, yeah...no. Especially bacon. Coffee...I drink cafe au lait. Always have. And I do indulge in the occasional Starbucks venti mocha frappucino light (no whipped cream) because that's like a coffee milkshake to me. Pumpkin should be in pie except I found a recipe for pumpkin (which is actually a very healthy thing to eat) waffles that I might try with bacon and sausage on the side for a chilly-evening dinner. I spice my Italian sauces. I barely salt everything else. Hot stuff? Just enough for a light burn on the back of the tongue. LOL

  2. I bought a frozen meal that looked good. Said it was Chicken and pasta with ranch and bacon. Mmmm. Teach me not to read the ingredients. Peppers were listed well before bacon and that's all I tasted in the dish. I couldn't eat it (I hate peppers). But did peppers make the cover? No. Because apparently bacon sells. Well, they sold that one to me. I won't buy another.

Still, there is an overload of bacon I just don't understand. I like it with my chicken & hamburgers fine, and as a topping on my salad, but not in my ice cream. Yuck!

I like pumpkin. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cheesecake. Dairy Queen has the pumpkin pie blizzard. That's pretty good. But then, it's just a pumpkin pie all mixed in with the ice cream. I guess I'm one of those who wouldn't mind seeing pumpkin all year 'round. Mmmm...

Red velvet cake doesn't bother me so much as the cheese cream frosting that it usually comes with. Too much! Not worth the calories.

As for spicy... Seasoned is okay. Hot is not. I don't like my food biting back.

  3. Red hot & spicy is for when you're young & adventurous and believe you'll live forever. The older you get the more you actually want to taste your food - IMHO (which I've just found out means in my humble opinion - 21st century here I come).

Coffee is coffee - I occasionally enjoy a caramel latte but generally it's just black & decaf. I can't take the full fat stuff anymore as it makes my heart jump.

Bacon is a deliciously delightful treat, especially between 2 slices of bread with HP sauce on it. Yummy in my tummy.

Pumpkin - only ever had pumpkin pie once at a Thanksgiving dinner with some American friends when we lived in Peru. Nice enough but I can live without it. It hasn't invaded the UK in a huge way, unlike Red Velvet which is getting more & more notice. I'm not a big fan of that either.
