Should've Already Read, but Haven't

I've been thinking about this off and on recently.  There are a slew of authors out there I should have read already, but haven't.  So, here's my list of authors I need to make a concerted effort to read - you know, when I have time and when my TBR pile isn't so huge.

J.D. Robb* (Naked In Death - finished 7/18/12)
Scott Westerfield

Sherrilyn Kenyon
Catherine Coulter
Mark Twain
Madeleine L'Engle (The Young Unicorns - got partway through and gave up 7/22/12)
Stephen Coonts
Dean Koontz
Andre Norton
Robert Heinlein
PC Cast
Patricia Cornwell
Raymond Chandler
James Michener
VC Andrews
Jean Auel
Gregory Maguire
Christine Feehan
Anne McCaffrey
Andre Norton
Mercedes Lackey
James Clavell
Arthur C. Clarke
Arthur Hailey
Joseph Conrad
Herman Wouk
Louisa May Alcott
Larry McMurtry
Janet Evanovich
Laurel K. Hamilton
Thomas Harris
Daniel Defoe

There are probably a lot more, but I think you've suffered enough.   Frankly, I'm shocked that I haven't read at least one book by these people over the years.

Now it's your turn.  Who are some authors you feel like you should have read a long time ago, but haven't?  Any suggestions on which books I should start with from these authors?

*I checked Naked in Death out from the library yesterday, so that'll be off the list soon.

And no, I still haven't read Jane Austen, but after years of trying, I gave up.  She's just not for me.

  1. I finally just started To Kill a Mockingbird yesterday, after years of telling myself I really needed to.
If I were you, I'd begin with some nice Mark Twain short stories. I loved his Diary of Adam and Eve.

  2. Ooo, I'm jealous. Reading To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time is awesome. Short stories sounds like a plan, Faith.

  3. Andre Norton is a nostalgic favorite of mine. I loved her Witch World series. I have most of them and someday will have all of them in the library. I also was in love with Hosteen Storm, the Amerind (American Indian-Navajo) beast master/soldier who has no planet to return to after the end of the galactic war. And you know how I feel about JD Robb.

I need to read some Neil Gaiman. I haven't and can't figure out why I haven't. Oh, wait, it might have to do with the 170 books already on my TBR pile. I'm trying to think of some of the classics but I think I've sampled just about all of them. I'll have to do some contemplating to see who I've missed.

Good luck on all the reading in your future. ;-)

  4. I can't figure out why I haven't read Andre Norton, so I get it. Heck, I read my first Edgar Rice Burroughs just recently, so I've definitely missed some awesome writers along the way. You know, I'm not sure I've read Gaiman either. I thought I had, but then I realized I was confusing him with that guy who wrote Golden Compass.

    Thanks, Silver. You, too. =o)

  5. A great list! I have mine on Goodreads. Can't think of them off the top of my head. Wait, just remembered one! Garth Nix.
