I Should've Taken That Left Turn at Albuquerque

Okay, so there I am working on my WIP, trying to keep to the path when I look up and I'm at a totally different place than where I thought I was headed.  I'm not lost, per se, but I did not intend to end up here.  Seriously.  And I'm not quite sure how to get back onto the original path - or if I even want to at this point.  I do love where this new twist has dropped me, but it kinda craps out a lot of what I kinda had planned for later.

I love it when that happens.

And I hate it when that happens.

What about you?  I mean, if you're a plotter, this probably doesn't happen to you, but if it has, drop a comment.  And for us pantsers and plansterers, how do you feel about getting lost on the way to what you thought the end was?

  1. I remember when Sean dropped a bombshell on me in WOLF MOON. Totally changed everything--all for the better. Personally, I follow the story/characters. If they lead me somewhere new, and it's good, awesome! And surprisingly, the trail will oftentimes cross back to the original plot line, merge and continue on. Something to consider.

Oh, and turning left at Albuquergue? Yeah, that's what happened to Caleb in the second Penumbra book. Literally. LOLOL

  2. I'm directionally challenged in real life so I'm a plotter in fiction.

Hope you enjoy wherever you end up wandering!

  3. And Wolf Moon turned out great, Silver. LOL, and I was thinking more along the lines of Bugs Bunny, but that works, too. ;o)

Thanks, JB. I'm enjoying it so far.

  4. This has happened a few times for me, but I've always found the twist makes the story stronger. Sometimes your characters know best =)
