Going For a Walk

For real.  Not in my head.  Although, I'll probably do some walking in my head while I'm out there getting exercise.  I've got Jo and her friends up against a wall, and I'm not quite sure where they need to go from here.  Hell, I haven't even really figured out what the new climax to this new version of DLN is going to be.

Here's hoping the walk shaves some calories off my ever-widening ass (yes, there is a song that goes along with the term - to the tune of Poor Wandering One from Pirates of Penzance - and no, my song's not that good) and sparks something in my head.

What do you do when you need to think through some aspect of your writing?

  1. Sometimes I'll get help doing mundane things, like driving. Sometimes I'll actually sit in a dark room so that my brain can wander without other sensory distractions. It's actually helped get me out of a few tight spots!

  2. Ironing helps me, although to be honest I only do that once a week when I have to. Gardening is great too for clearing my mind and letting ideas begin to flow.

  3. Ooh, glad to know I'm not the only one who gets stumped. And I can tell you, I don't do the dishes to help me with my problem ;)

Walking helps - but pacing back and forth actually works the best. It forces my brain to focus on the question at hand and I seem to get good ideas when I do it. I also mumble to myself as I'm pacing - so most people think I'm nuts!
