The Fun of Making it Up As I Go Along

When last I left my intrepid heroine, she was running on fumes as she edged her way into the storeroom to save the pirate, while trying not to get shot by said pirate along the way.  And I dropped a bombshell (figuratively) I didn't see coming and wasn't quite prepared for.  Of course, now that I dropped it, I'm a little unsure how to proceed, but that's half the fun of writing.  (Or at least my style of writing - which is to say a bizarre mix of plotting, planning and pantsing.)

I can't wait to find out what happens next.

Do you plot or do you let your writing surprise you?  Or does your writing surprise you even when you plot?  Or if you'd rather, what's the most fun part of writing for you?

  1. I have tried to plot. I think its magnificent, but it does not work for me, so I totally let my writing surprise me. My first draft is considered my "very detailed outline." LOL. But it works, and I love it!

  2. Your story sounds like so much fun! And I love being caught unawares with my own writing. It's fun (yet sometimes frustrating), not knowing what will happen!

  3. I plot but those unlooked for bombshells come anyway! It's so fun.

  4. No plotting for me. My characters won't let me. I'll be writing a scene (a scene I've pictured in my head and just KNOW how it will go) when one of my characters will "say" something that totally throws me (and changes the scene), but is so real. And I love when that happens, too.

Yeah, I can't wait to see how my book will end!

  5. I am shifting gradually from total pantser to light plotter. But I'll never have those lengthy outlines - 2 pages max for me. And bombshells definitely still come! And I love them! First drafts are the bestest ever :)

  6. I love being surprised! Happens to me all the time during first drafts (and sometimes second and third drafts, too). It's honestly my favorite part of writing.
